Delaware Street Safe Routes to School Corridor Bicycle Improvements Project
Project Updates
December 2025
The Project’s construction contract was awarded by City Council on November 17, 2025. Construction is currently anticipated to start in February of 2026. Due to long lead times for signal/electrical equipment, the Project is anticipated to be constructed in two phases, with Project completion anticipated by October of 2026.
September 2025
During the September 2, 2025 City Council meeting, Council directed staff to move forward with a revised design of the Project to retain the second southbound travel lane between Bermuda Drive and Saratoga Drive. This option removed additional parking on the east side of S Delaware Street in this segment and identified new parking on Pacific Boulevard to partially offset the parking loss. Council also supported design revisions on the northeast corner of the Delaware St / 28th Avenue intersection to address a conflict between bikes, buses, and short-term parking needs in the area.
Project Description
The Delaware Street Safe Routes to School Corridor Bicycle Improvements project will modify the existing bike lanes (Class II) and bike routes (Class III) on Delaware Street starting just south of 19th Avenue to the southerly end of Delaware Street where it transitions to Pacific Boulevard south of 31st Avenue.
New protected bike lanes (Class IV) will be installed from Bermuda Drive to 28th Avenue, and bike boulevard treatments will be installed from 28th Avenue to the southerly limits of the project. New pedestrian connectivity and safety improvements will also be incorporated, including an enhanced crossing at Pacific Boulevard just south of Bermuda Drive, an exclusive pedestrian phase at the Delaware St / 28th Avenue traffic signal, and a raised crossing at the southerly end of the project.
This project is grant-funded through the Caltrans Active Transportation Program (ATP) Cycle 5 funding as a project that seeks to increase and promote bicycle and pedestrian trips.
