The City needs passionate, involved individuals to advise our elected leaders on matters of community interest. We’re seeking diversely skilled citizens from all walks of life to share their ideas and expertise. Be sure to sign up for email updates.
Youth Commissioners
Youth Commissioners (not to be confused with the City's Youth Activities Council) are non-voting, ex officio representatives appointed to advise on Boards or Commissions. Youth Commissioners serve on the Library Board, Park and Recreation Commission, Senior Advisory Commission, and the Sustainability & Infrastructure Commission.
To qualify, Youth Commissioners must be between 13 and 17 years old and must live or study in the City of San Mateo.

The demographic information you choose to provide is voluntary and optional. This information will be considered confidential, kept separate from your application and refusal to provide it will not affect your candidacy for appointment. The City of San Mateo will use this information solely to conduct research and compile statistical reports regarding the composition of its Board and Commission applicants.

I'm interesting in applying...what's involved?
Serving on a Board or Commission is an opportunity for you to participate in local government and serve your community. Learn more about each of the boards and commissions. Start by attending a meeting of the Board/Commission to which you are considering applying (highly encouraged).
Term Length & Limits
- Commissioners and Board Members are appointed by the City Council and serve, without pay, for four-year terms. There is an opportunity to be re-appointed for up to two consecutive terms.
Time Commitment
- Commissions meeting with different frequencies, but typically once a month. Additional time is required to prepare for each meeting.
- Commissions and Boards act under policies and ordinances of the City Council.

Requirements
- Resident and a registered voter of the City of San Mateo
- Meeting attendance is required for Board and Commission Members
- Must attend a commissioner orientation session and any training offered
