Maintaining and installing signage appropriately is an important job and one of the many services we provide. The City of San Mateo uses the
California Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) as a guide in deciding what a sign should look like and how it should be installed.
Our engineers evaluate the need for signs on a continual basis. After an engineer determines that a sign is needed, the engineer then will determine what sign should be installed and the most effective location for it.
The Public Works Department installs and maintains all street signage such as:
- Parking restrictive signs
- Street name signs in your neighborhood
- Speed limit signs
- Stop signs
- Bike route signs
- School zone signs
- Crosswalk signs
