  1. Who is responsible for maintaining the sidewalk?
  2. As a property owner, how do I know which section of sidewalk I am responsible for?
    • All property owners are responsible for the section of sidewalk adjacent to their property.
  3. How do I know when my sidewalk needs to be repaired?
    • A sidewalk needs to be repaired when there is a potential tripping hazard that could cause damage or injury. A tripping hazard could be caused by: uneven pavement, missing pavement, cracks or holes in the pavement, etc.
  4. Who can repair my sidewalk?
    • You may perform the repairs yourself or you may hire a contractor to perform the work. Whoever performs the work must have insurance on file with the City and a Class A or C license with the City.
  5. Does the City have standard details for sidewalk repairs?
  6. Do I need a permit to repair my sidewalk?
    • Yes, to repair the sidewalk, you or your contractor must obtain an Encroachment Permit. You must also notify the City of the anticipated work, and have the City inspect and accept the work in accordance with the encroachment permit requirements.
  7. What if a tree is involved with my sidewalk damages/repairs?
    • If a tree is involved with your sidewalk damages or repairs, please contact the city arborist. A permit is required to remove any roots within six times the trunk diameter of a Heritage Tree. In other cases, the City arborist will be able to provide assistance in whether an additional permit is required.
  8. Why did I receive a Notice to Repair?
    • A Notice to Repair is issued when the City has identified a portion of sidewalk in need of repair.
  9. What should I do if I received a Notice to Repair?
    • If you receive a Notice to Repair, you will be required to respond to the notice within 90 days. You must then proceed with the process of repairs, which includes obtaining an encroachment permit and notifying the city of the anticipated work. The property owner is 100% liable for all incurred injuries and damages caused by the sidewalk.
