Welcome to the Community Development Department (CDD) where we work to enhance the quality of life in San Mateo by guiding growth and supporting safe, vibrant, and inclusive neighborhoods. We collaborate with residents, businesses, and developers to shape a resilient and thriving community. CDD includes four divisions:

• Building - ensures structures are safe and up to code through plan reviews, permits, and inspections.
• Planning - manages land use and development to align with the City’s long-term goals.
• Housing & Neighborhood Services - supports affordable housing, tenant protections, and programs that strengthen community well-being.
• Code Enforcement - helps maintain neighborhood standards by addressing property and zoning violations.

Walk-in code consultations are available:

• Planning: Monday - Friday, 8:00am-12:00pm
• Building: Monday - Friday, 9:00am-11:30am
