Community Development

Welcome to the Community Development Department (CDD for short!) where we strive to ensure a quality built environment, healthy neighborhoods and a strong economic base in the City.  

Community Development includes: 
  • Building Division:  Ensures public safety, health and welfare through the effective administration and enforcement of local ordinances and California Building Codes.
  • Code Enforcement:  Enhances City of San Mateo's quality of life by ensuring and protecting the health, safety, and welfare of all residents and visitors.
  • Neighborhood Improvement and Housing:  Manages multiple programs designed to maintain the quality of neighborhoods and build new affordable housing through local and federal funds.
  • Planning Division:  Plans for the physical, social, and economic development of the City and ensures compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) for both public and private projects.

NOFA 2019 Cover Page

On Monday, January 7, 2019, the City of San Mateo released a Notice of Funding Available (NOFA) for the development or expansion of child care facilities or Family Child Care Homes. The application materials and additional information are available on the City’s website: Child Care Facilities NOFA

These funds are restricted for capital improvements only, not operating costs, and the goal is to expand the number of available child care spaces within the City of San Mateo. 

There will be an important informational meeting on Thursday, January 24 at 10:00am for all potential applicants at San Mateo City Hall, Conference Room C, 330 West 20th Avenue.
