Simple and accessible, Michael Kesselman’s sculptures portray common objects in unexpected forms that are surprising, intelligent, beautiful, and humorous. Is a chair with five legs still a chair? What happens when two eggs sit at the helm of a beater? What’s the point of an inverted chair impersonating a cello? Made from incongruous components, they suggest something with a unique form, content, and purpose. In their oddity, they attempt to define the essence of things by disrupting our expectations. Kesselman was born in Baltimore, raised in Arizona, and has lived and worked as an artist and writer for many years in the Bay Area. ** Display Case, 2nd Floor **

This exhibition features two projects completed by students in College of San Mateo's Intro to Graphic Design class, taught by Professor Vera Fainshtein. While creating their Typographic Illustrations, students were asked to think about type as an expressive visual element. The objective of the second assignment was to design currency for a specific target audience (i.e. universal or a particular country). To find out more about degrees, certificates, and the digital media courses offered at College of San Mateo, check out www.collegeofsanmateo.edu/digitalmedia or email Prof. Vera Fainshtein at fainshteinv@smccd.edu. ** Art Gallery, 1st Floor **
