2. When, where and at what time are City Council meetings held?

The San Mateo City Council holds its regular meetings two times a month, on the 1st and 3rd Monday, at 7:00pm. These meetings are held in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 330 West 20th Avenue, San Mateo, CA 94403 and are open to the public. Meetings are occasionally moved to Tuesdays due to holidays. During the months of July, August and December, only one meeting is held during the month.

Agendas are posted by the end of the day on the Thursday before each City Council meeting. You can also subscribe for agenda updates by email.

4. Are the City Council meetings televised?

Yes, City Council meetings are televised live on SMTV. Cable subscribers can watch meetings being televised on the following cable channels: Channel 26 (Astound) Channel 27 (Comcast) Channel 99 (ATT U-Verse) You can also watch online and find a schedule of televised replays through our website.

City Council meeting minutes are available on our Council agendas and minutes page. Minutes are listed after the agenda items for each meeting.

6. How do I get a copy of a City Council staff report?

Staff reports are posted online in the agenda packet for each City Council meeting. You may also request a specific staff report by contacting the City Clerk’s Office: (650) 522-7040 or polds@cityofsanmateo.org

7. How long do Council Members serve?

The five Council Members serve at large for four-year terms with a maximum of three consecutive terms.

8. How does the City Council operate?

San Mateo operates under a Council/Manager form of government. The Council as the legislative body, represents the entire community and is empowered by the City Charter to formulate Citywide policy. The Mayor is rotated annually among all council members each December.

9. What are Study Sessions and when are they held?

Study sessions are designed to explore complex issues in depth. The City Council holds study sessions on an as needed basis. These meetings are held typically immediately prior to their regular meetings. Separate agendas are posted for these meetings. Typically no action is taken, however direction to staff may be given.
