Meet Mateo - the Library's New Outreach Vehicle!

Join us as we unveil our new all-electric outreach vehicle on Thursday, February 7 at the Main Library! Our new outreach vehicle will enhance the community’s access to a variety of programs and expand our literary reach far beyond the library’s walls. This innovative service model will allow staff to conduct activities at a variety of locations throughout San Mateo. The name “Mateo” was suggested by a local 9-year-old who won the Library’s nickname contest. The fully electric, zero emission vehicle is supported by a state voucher program and the generosity of supporters of the Library Foundation. The celebration includes a ribbon and cake cutting ceremony, guest speakers including Mayor Diane Papan, and a lion dance performance! The event runs 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Main Library, 55 W. Third Ave.

What Do You Think About Bike Share in San Mateo?

Please take a quick survey to share your input on the future of bike share in San Mateo. We are also seeking input on electric scooters after the City was approached by several operators. Your feedback will help our commissioners and City Council members who will evaluate options for next steps later this year. The City currently has a pilot program with Lime, which offers bikes in San Mateo, Foster City and Burlingame. These types of programs provide users with short-term access to bikes or e-scooters on an as-needed basis, usually through an app. The survey only takes a few minutes and is open through February 24. The Sustainability and Infrastructure Commission will meet March 13, 2019 to discuss next steps.

Are You Catching This Rain?

With rain clouds rolling in, now is a great time to take advantage of rain barrel rebates! You can help maintain a healthy urban watershed by installing a rain barrel at home. San Mateo residents are eligible for up to $100 in rebates for qualifying rain barrels through the Bay Area Water Supply and Conservation Agency. Rain barrels are used to collect rainwater from hard surfaces such as rooftops, to store for later use. They can also help reduce demand on our potable water system by using collected rainfall to irrigate gardens.

Be Prepared - Free Sandbags

Another storm is on the way and Public Works crews have been clearing storm drains. Did we miss one near you? Report a clogged storm drain at (650) 522-7300. Don’t forget San Mateo residents can get free sandbags at the Wastewater Treatment Plant 2015 Detroit Drive, or Corp Yard 1949 Pacific Blvd. Learn how you can prepare your family for a storm by visiting our web page

High School Students Organize Feminine Product Drive to Support Women in Need

The San Mateo Activist Coalition, a local activist group founded by San Mateo high school students, is organizing a feminine product drive to help homeless people in the area and City Hall will host a donation bin during the week of February 11-15. Feminine products are an expensive necessity which many homeless people do not have access to. The coalition would greatly appreciate donations of wrapped/sealed pads, tampons or menstrual cups. The donations will be provided to a local nonprofit serving homeless people in the community.
