San Mateo County November 6 Election Ballot Box

Election Day is Almost Here and You Can Vote NOW!

Do you know how to engage in democracy? Find out what’s on your ballot for the November 6 midterm elections and learn about the range of options for casting your vote! As part of the all-mail ballot election, San Mateo City Hall is serving as a universal Vote Center where any San Mateo County resident can come drop off their ballot, vote in person, or register to vote and cast a provisional ballot even on Election Day! There are five universal Vote Centers that will be open in San Mateo starting November 3: City Hall, the County Registration & Elections Division Office, the Mid-Peninsula Boys & Girls Club, the County Health Department’s Administration Office, and the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center. Your traditional neighborhood polling place may be closed, but you can go to any one of the dozens of universal Vote Centers throughout the County!

Childcare and refreshments are offered at both workshops! Workshops are identical, so pick a time that works for you.
Morning Session: 10 a.m. to noon (sign up begins at 9:30 a.m.) at Central Park Recreation Center, 50 E. Fifth Ave., San Mateo.
Afternoon Session: 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. (sign up begins at 2 p.m.) at the Hillsdale High School Cafeteria, 3115 Del Monte Street, San Mateo.

You Can Now Review Plan to Improve Recreation Facilities  

The Recreation Facilities Strategic Plan – Vision to Reality is ready for the next step! Following public input, a set of options has been refined and recommendations developed for the future of San Mateo’s recreation facilities. The plan will be presented to the Parks and Recreation Commission on November 7 and to the City Council on November 19 at City Hall. Find out how we’re developing an actionable plan to improve our recreation facilities to better serve our community for the next 50 years! Learn About the Caltrain 25th Avenue Grade Separation

You’ve probably noticed a lot of construction activities along the Caltrain corridor near 25th Avenue. If you’d like to learn more about this important project that will improve safety and mobility, as well as reduce train horn noise, please join Caltrain for a community meeting on Tuesday, November 13. The long-planned project includes building a new elevated Hillsdale Caltrain Station, raising the tracks and creating three grade-separated crossings at 25th, 28th and 31st avenues. Stores along 25th Avenue will remain open during construction, so please continue to support our local businesses! The meeting is Tuesday, November 13 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at 2121 El Camino Real, San Mateo. Visit Caltrain’s website to learn more and sign up for construction updates.

Library Welcomes You to Join in Novel Writing Month  

It’s National Novel Writing Month and the Library has the perfect place for you to be creative! On the first three Saturdays in November, the Laurel Room at the Main Library will be transformed into the “Writers’ Room,” a quiet place for anyone wishing to write and be inspired by being in a room with other writers. We provide the room with several electrical outlets, and refreshments including coffee, tea and cookies! Join us from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays November 3, 10 and 17 at the Library, 55 W. Fifth Ave.

Ice Skaters in Central Park

Lace up Your Skates and Meet us in Central Park!

The Fourth annual San Mateo On Ice holiday skating rink returns Friday, November 9! Located in Central Park, the outdoor rink features 9,000 square feet of REAL ice. Skaters will be able to skate in the sunshine during the day and under the stars at night. Bring your mittens and experience daily recreational skating at the Bay Area’s largest outdoor holiday rink! Cost is $15 per person and includes skate rental. The company also offers parties, private ice time and special events! Weather depending, we even have a special holiday performance and event planned for November 18!

Learn How GIS Makes a Difference in Society

San Mateo adopted geographical information systems technology 15 years ago and is celebrating GIS Day on Wednesday, November 14 with an interactive program at City Hall. Come learn how we’re using web-based maps, data collection, cartographic visualization and leadership through GIS technology in the fields of community development, planning, asset management and public safety. Curious about property information, crime data, development projects or road repairs? Come see demonstrations of how this technology can be used to communicate vital information! Join us in the atrium of City Hall, 330 W. 20th Ave. from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on November 14th. You can also check out our GIS Maps and App portal!

Support San Mateo PAL This Giving Tuesday 

Giving Tuesday on November 27 is a global day of giving. Celebrated after Thanksgiving and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving.
