Background
The City Council seat is being vacated as current Deputy Mayor Diane Papan has been elected to the state Assembly and her last day on San Mateo City Council will be Dec. 4, 2022. This at-large interim council term is for 2 years through 2024. Per the City's voter-approved charter, filling this vacancy is done by appointment of the City Council.
The City is in the process of transitioning to District Elections. Voters in districts 1, 3 and 5 voted this past election for council members. Voters in districts 2 and 4 will elect council members in 2024.
