This does not happen very often! There’s an upcoming vacancy on the San Mateo City Council and applications are now open. If you’re interested in serving your community, consider applying for the 2-year, at-large term on Council. Learn more online and apply by Wednesday, Dec. 7 at 5 p.m.

Applicant Requirements

  • 18 years of age or older

  • Registered voter and resident of the city for at least 30 days prior to appointment

  • File a Statement of Economic Interest (Form 700) for calendar year 2022

Process

  • All qualified candidates will make a 10-minute public presentation at a special City Council meeting on Monday, Dec. 12

  • Council may ask follow-up questions

  • Council will deliberate and vote for appointee at this meeting

Background
The City Council seat is being vacated as current Deputy Mayor Diane Papan has been elected to the state Assembly and her last day on San Mateo City Council will be Dec. 4, 2022. This at-large interim council term is for 2 years through 2024. Per the City's voter-approved charter, filling this vacancy is done by appointment of the City Council. 

The City is in the process of transitioning to District Elections. Voters in districts 1, 3 and 5 voted this past election for council members. Voters in districts 2 and 4 will elect council members in 2024.
