Artists Wanted for Racial Equity Art Mural in DowntownCalling all artists! We are looking for professional and/or emerging artists to help design a new Racial Equity Art Project in Downtown San Mateo. This new public art will be a painting along the B Street pedestrian mall that reflects San Mateo’s diversity and commitment to racial equity.
Artists are encouraged to respond to our Request for Qualifications (RFQ) by Jan. 23, 2023 and submit their portfolio of work and their approach to this project. The artist selection will occur through a multi-phased, public process. The City’s Civic Arts Committee anticipates choosing five finalists that will receive a $1,000 stipend to develop a proposal, including a rendering of the artwork for the site. This RFQ is open to all artists, with priority consideration given to those living in or having a relation to the City of San Mateo or San Mateo County. Artists of color and BIPOC, women, LGBTQ++, and members of historically marginalized groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

Reach Codes & Building More Sustainably We’re proud to be one of the first to help make existing buildings more environmentally-friendly by encouraging electrification through new Green Building Reach Codes. Starting Jan. 1, 2023, the new reach codes will require certain types of residential remodel projects to move toward electrification and reduce reliance on natural gas.
Like many local jurisdictions, San Mateo is strengthening its local requirements for all-electric construction in new buildings, but only a handful of other cities have also applied electrification requirements to existing buildings. Buildings account for nearly 38% of the greenhouse gas emissions in the City, and reach codes are an important step to address climate change.

Traffic Changes on Saratoga Near County Event CenterDriving near the San Mateo County Event Center? Watch out for lane closures and changes to traffic patterns. As part of the construction for our UFES project and Clean Water Program, we recently closed the two eastbound lanes of Saratoga Drive and converted one of the westbound lanes for eastbound travel. Bicycle and pedestrian traffic will also be adjusted for safety purposes. This Saratoga traffic control is anticipated to remain in effect for a few more months.
These closures will allow for the continuation of pipeline construction in Saratoga Drive in conjunction with construction of the UFES project. Please watch for signs indicating traffic pattern changes, and allow extra time in your travel plans to accommodate the new traffic patterns. Thank you for your patience as we work to improve the infrastructure our community relies upon!
