Happy Halloween

Happy Halloween!

Let’s ensure that we all have a safe Halloween night so we can see Tuesday’s boo-tiful sunrise!  Check out these safety tips from our San Mateo Police Department.

  • Costumes: Make sure costumes do not affect the ability to walk appropriately or to see clearly. Injuries may occur if costumes create a trip hazard or don’t allow for hazards to be seen. Make sure costumes are noticeable, reflective, and flame retardant. It is helpful for parents of small children to attach your name and phone number/address to the costume.

  • Trick-or-Treat: Only trick-or-treat at homes with a porch light on and appear to be participating in the Halloween Spirit. Do NOT doorbell ditch. Parents should inspect candy before allowing children to eat their treats. Remind children to never enter a home or vehicle of a stranger. If entering a Haunted House, make sure there is a trusted adult accompanying the child.

  • Watch & Listen: Parents, keep an eye on your child at all times. There are sure to be many witches, monsters, Marvel & Disney characters, and more out there, so make sure you know which one belongs to you. Come up with key words you can say out loud if separated. For example, when I say “Marco”, you say “Polo” until reunited.

  • Walk & Travel: Walk, don’t run from house to house. Use marked crosswalks and stay on sidewalks. Pay attention to vehicles in the roadway. Eye contact goes a long way. Use flashlights/glow sticks for visibility.

Street work planned in downtown

Refreshing Downtown Roads

Who doesn’t like refreshed roads? As part of our ongoing work to improve our streets, we’ll be working in Downtown San Mateo soon! We’ll be slurry sealing a few sections of road on Monday, Oct. 31 and there will be short-term impacts including temporary street closures to allow the slurry seal to dry.

  • B Street Pedestrian Mall (from 1st to 3rd avenues) street closed Monday 7:30 a.m. to Tuesday 3 p.m. Sidewalks will remain open

  • 4th Avenue (from El Camino Real to Ellsworth) street closed Monday 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., parking on southside will remain closed until Tuesday morning

We’re working with our local businesses to help them temporarily remove outdoor dining on the affected roads. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we work to improve our roads! Learn more about our Pavement Rehabilitation program.

City leaders accept state funding for wellness program

$500,000 for Mental Health Clinician Programs

San Mateo County and four local police departments including the City of San Mateo’s were recently awarded $500,000 in state funding to expand our Community Wellness & Crisis Response Team Program.

The state funds were secured by Assemblymember Kevin Mullin and will help expand the program that San Mateo Police have championed along with North Central resident Gloria Brown. The program provides additional training for first responders when interacting with individuals living with neurodegenerative disease like Alzheimer’s or dementia. The funds will support the programs in Daly City, Redwood City, South San Francisco and San Mateo police departments. Read more about this in a recent Daily Journal article.

Solid waste bin inspectors

Inspectors Coming to San Mateo to Check Solid Waste & Recycling Bins

RethinkWaste will be conducting randomized inspections of solid waste bins Oct. 30-Nov. 4. These annual contamination monitoring “Route Reviews” of residential and commercial cart/bins contents are required by the new state law SB 1383.

They will also leave outreach tags indicating whether bins were properly sorted or if not, provide information about how to properly sort your solid waste. Traffic & Transportation Updates

School pedestrian safety

School Safety & Pedestrian Project

Safety on our roads is a priority for us and our community. In collaboration with the San Mateo County Office of Education, we recently installed pilot pedestrian safety projects near San Mateo High School and College Park Elementary School. The grant-funded projects are intended to increase safety for school children in the area, and will be in place up to 2 months while we evaluate its effectiveness and collect community feedback. The improvements include painted curb extensions to increase pedestrian visibility on Poplar Avenue at Eldorado Street and in the crosswalk at College Park Elementary school.

Traffic Changes on Saratoga Near County Event Center

Driving near the San Mateo County Event Center? Watch out for lane closures and changes to traffic patterns. As part of the construction for our UFES project and Clean Water Program, we recently closed the two eastbound lanes of Saratoga Drive and converted one of the westbound lanes for eastbound travel. Bicycle and pedestrian traffic will also be adjusted for safety purposes. This Saratoga traffic control is anticipated to remain in effect for approximately 5 months.

These closures will allow for the continuation of pipeline construction in Saratoga Drive in conjunction with construction of the UFES project. Please watch for signs indicating traffic pattern changes, and allow extra time in your travel plans to accommodate the new traffic patterns. Thank you for your patience as we work to improve the infrastructure our community relies upon!

Visit our Public Meeting Portal for instructions on how to join the meeting.

State's Review of San Mateo's Plans for Housing Growth

On Monday, Nov. 7, the City Council will hold a study session to review the comments provided by the State Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) on the City’s Draft Housing Element, and provide staff with direction on updating the Housing Element in response to the comments.

The Housing Element is a state-mandated plan for how the City of San Mateo will plan for future population growth and can accommodate at least 7,000 new homes over the next 8 years.

Visit our Housing Element web page to learn more and read the State's letter. Information on how to attend the Nov. 7 study session will be posted on our Public Meeting Portal by Nov. 4.
