Rotary Day of Service - Protecting the Environment

Register for a free lunch

This event includes a hands-on plant restoration and beach clean-up activity. The environmental exhibitor fair will showcase electric vehicles and e-bikes, along with environmental organizations. Everyone is welcome to attend but be sure to register if you would like a free lunch.


City of San Mateo Team Up to Clean Up

This Earth Day, give back to the environment by participating in a community cleanup! Join the City of San Mateo’s, Team Up to Clean Up,  for an outdoor cleanup event at Ryder Park. Registration is required, if you are interested in participating please register online using our Volunteer Site.


Shoreway Environmental Center In-Person Tour

RethinkWaste is brining back in-person tours of the Shoreway Environmental Center to celebrate Earth Month. Each hour-long tour will provide a look inside the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) and Transfer Station. Tour guides will also review how to sort waste properly and answer questions about hard-to-recycle items. Registration is required and space is limited.


Queer Voices: A Panel on Intersectionality and the Environment

What does queering environmental sustainability mean? Queer Voices: A Panel on Intersectionality and the Environment will include a presentation about the history of environmental sustainability and a panel with two guest speakers from Planting Justice. Come hear from LGBTQ+ folx of color about their experiences in sustainability justice work and what the history of queer and marginalized people can teach us in reexamining the current sustainability movement. Following the event, participants will learn about resources, books, and organizations to support in solidarity with Earth Day 2022's theme, "Invest in our Planet''.

San Mateo County Composting Workshop

These workshops teach composting options suitable for those with or without a backyard. Apartment dwellers welcome! Compost provides valuable nutrients for your garden soil, helps retain moisture, which saves water, prevents erosion, loosens clay and compacted soils for better drainage, and suppresses weeds. It is rewarding to know you are turning what some consider waste into precious organic material for your garden.


Vegetable Gardening in Time of Drought

Spring is the time to plant your summer vegetable garden.  At the same time drought is, once again, upon us.  Most of California was dry-farmed before irrigation systems were common. Zoom in and learn about what crops can tolerate little to no water, bring back some tried and true practices.  Also, learn about ways to grow more food using the same amount of water by incorporating techniques, tips and tricks  like hydro-zoning, mulching, cover cropping, companion planting and regularly checking your irrigation system.
