Hurry - We're Getting Closer to Finalizing a Map!

Help Draw San Mateo's New 5-District Elections Map

Join a Workshop this Saturday, Oct. 2

We’re creating the City of San Mateo’s first district elections map and want to hear from residents about how we should split the City into five City Council districts.

Upcoming Workshops this Saturday – Map Drawing

Join an in-person workshop to learn about this important change and start drawing your own map for how you think the City should be split into five districts! The same information and map drawing activity will be presented at each workshop.

  • Saturday, Oct. 2, 2021: (workshop hosted in Spanish) at 9:30 a.m. at Congregational Church, 225 Tilton Ave.
  • Saturday, Oct. 2, 2021: 1 p.m. at Senior Center, 2645 Alameda de las Pulgas

View our outreach schedule for more information about upcoming in-person workshops and virtual City Council public hearings. City Council will hold virtual public hearings on  Oct. 14 to review draft maps, and on Nov. 1, 2021 to vote on the final map.

What do you think about Map 3?

After hearing from the public, the Council gave direction to proceed with asking the community for more input and revising Draft Map 3 as the primary option to consider. Visit the Draft Maps for Review web page.

NEW - 5 District Mapping Tool

A new feature has been turned on for the interactive online mapping tool DistrictR! You can now draw your ideas for how to create a five-district map, with the ideal population of about 21,000 residents per district.

DistrictR Map of City

Why is this Important?

The new district elections map will determine how voters elect their City Council members for the next 10 years. The City Council sets policies and allocates funding that impact a variety of issues important to the San Mateo community. This includes everything from housing and childcare, to parks and transportation improvements. District elections will directly impact how you elect future City Council members to make these decisions for your community!

Currently, voters across the entire City elect all five council members through an at-large elections system. Under a new district election system, the City will be divided into separate districts, and voters will only be able to elect one council member who lives in their district.
