DistrictR Map of City

Why is this Important?

The new district elections map will determine how voters elect their City Council members for the next 10 years. The City Council sets policies and allocates funding that impact a variety of issues important to the San Mateo community. This includes everything from housing and childcare, to parks and transportation improvements. District elections will directly impact how you elect future City Council members to make these decisions for your community!

Currently, voters across the entire City elect all five council members through an at-large elections system. Under a new district election system, the City will be divided into separate districts, and voters will only be able to elect one council member who lives in their district. During a Sept. 13 public hearing, the City Council agreed the new district elections system will include five council districts, with council members rotating annually as mayor.
