Welcome to the City of San Mateo’s Monthly Volunteer Newsletter! This month’s edition highlights a one-day volunteer opportunity, an ongoing opportunity, and fundraiser opportunity. If you know anyone interested in volunteering for the City or volunteering within the area, please forward them this email and ask them to sign up on our email notification page to sign up for future newsletters.

One-Day Opportunity

Annual Bayfront Cleanup
The Bayfront Cleanup is an annual waterway and land cleanup held in the month of September. It’s San Mateo's largest, longest-running volunteer shoreline cleanup event and brings community awareness to cleaning up and protecting our marine environment in the San Francisco Bay. Please join us this year on September 18th from 8 AM to 12 PM at Ryder Park.

Please register online before the event.

Homework Central Tutor

Homework Central is seeking volunteers for our in-person after school program. As a volunteer tutor you will assist 3rd-5th grade students from North Central San Mateo with their homework at one of our four sites at Baywood, Park, or Sunnybrae schools.  We rely on volunteers to help students with their homework, engage them in skill-building exercises, and to be there for them when the work gets too hard or to celebrate their accomplishments. We provide training and all necessary materials and you need only commit to one 2-hour day per week.

To learn more about the program please check out our  Volunteer Information  page.  Everyone of high school age and above is welcome. Our volunteers make the work of Homework Central possible!

Walk, Run, Ride to the Moon

Self-Help for the Elderly is a non-profit organization that promotes independence, well-being, and dignity for older adults through culturally aligned services and programs in the San Francisco Bay Area. We serve over 40,000 older adults each year in San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Alameda and Contra Costa counties.

This virtual event connects friends and family with a reason to exercise and keep healthy. Your participation supports Self-Help for the Elderly's variety of programs to respond to emergency circumstances, enabling us to care for the seniors' health and safety.

Registration Starts: August 21, 2021
#WalkRunRide2Moon takes place where you are and when you want, any time between August 21, National Senior Citizens Day, and September 21, day of Moon Festival.

The City of San Mateo's Volunteer website has lots of resources for other volunteer opportunities. Please consider checking out the site for more information.
