Paying for City Services? New Fees Begin July 1 for Using Credit & Debit Cards
Starting July 1, 2020 customers who use a credit or debit card to make payments with the City of San Mateo will be subject to service fees.
Companies that process credit or debit card transactions typically charge about 2-3% of the transaction amount. The fee is paid directly to the company processing the transaction, and is not charged by the City. Customers can avoid these fees by paying with alternate methods such as cash, check or e-check.
Customers will be notified of the card fees prior to payment on online portals, with signs at City facilities, and when making payments over the phone.
Examples* of City services that are subject to credit and debit card service fees include:
Community Development:
All planning-related fees, building-related fees, and the fire plan check fee.
Finance:
Business tax.
Library:
Overdue fines, meeting room rentals, and passport processing services.Parks & Recreation:
Facility rentals; fitness passes; park impact fees; and all camps, programs and child care.
Police:
Permits, subpoenas, report copies, firearm storage fees, and vehicle releases.Public Works:
