The Community Development Department is getting ready to release a draft ordinance for how to implement Senate Bill 9 (SB 9) here in San Mateo. SB 9 is a new state law that requires cities to ministerially approve up to two main housing units (i.e. duplexes) and certain subdivisions (i.e. urban lot splits) in single-family zoned areas. The draft ordinance will be published on August 1, 2022 and covers a variety of topics including number of units permitted, design standards, and more.
