Impact on City Services

Staff in non-essential functions will be working remotely to the extent possible, so please expect some delay in responses. 

Public Meetings

  • All public meetings will be held as scheduled to handle essential business. To support the order to shelter in place and enforce social distancing, formal public meetings, including Council and Commission meetings, are being held remotely and are closed to in-person public attendance.
  • View live meetings, recorded meetings, and provide comment online: Visit the Public Meeting Portal to view live meetings, watch recorded meetings, and learn how to provide comment on agenda items.

City Hall Services

  • Doing Business with the City Remotely: In an effort to minimize potential exposure to COVID-19 and make interacting with the City easier, we’ve made a number of our services available online. Our Online and Remote Applications and Services page lists a collection of services available online as well as a number of applications that can either be submitted online or completed remotely by printing and faxing or mailing to the appropriate departments.
  • Limited Service: City Hall is currently open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am - 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm. Before coming to City Hall, please make sure you review and understand the Social Distancing Protocols for City Hall Visitors.
  • Finance Department: Business Tax - applications are available online and staff will respond to voicemails left on the main line.

Community Development Department (CDD) Services

Planning, Building, Code Enforcement and Housing Services staff are available for telephone and email inquiries - contact information for each division as well as more information about our services is available on the Community Development homepage.

  • Online Permit Center: The Community Development Department proudly announces a new self-service online permit center! We now process building permits, issue planning entitlements, accept online payments, and schedule inspections securely online.
  • Limited Advance Appointments: In-person appointments will be limited for those who are picking up permits with approved hard copy plans. CDD Permit Center advance appointments are available M-F between 8:30-11:30 a.m. and can be requested by directly contacting a Building Division staff member or emailing building.info@cityofsanmateo.org.  Before coming to City Hall, please make sure you review and understand the Social Distancing Protocols for City Hall Visitors.

Library Services

  • Libraries Open for Holds Pickup and Computer Appointments: Lobby holds pickup service and computer appointments are available at the Main, Hillsdale, and Marina Libraries during our open hours. There are ongoing virtual programs for adults, teens, and children. Check our online calendar on the Library website for more details.
  • Return Your Library Items: Overdue fees will not be incurred for items due. Checked out library items can be returned at the Main, Hillsdale, and Marina Libraries during book drop open hours.

Parks & Recreation Services

  • Recreation Programs Suspended: All registered and drop-in recreation programs, special events and activities are suspended until further notice. Staff can be reached on a limited basis at (650) 522-7400 or parksandrecreation@cityofsanmateo.org
  • All Recreation Centers Closed: The Senior Center and community centers at Beresford, Martin Luther King Jr., Shoreview and Lakeshore are closed. Poplar Creek Golf Course, the tennis courts at Central Park and Beresford Park, and the Central Park Japanese Garden are now open. Private facility rentals have been cancelled.
  • Senior Lunches will be available for delivery only. Pre-registration is required for the lunch program and space is limited. Please call (650) 522-7490 to be put on the waitlist.
  • Senior Transportation Program Uninterrupted: The Senior Get Around Transportation Program provided through Serra Cabs will continue uninterrupted.
  • Mobile Rec and PAL Activities Suspended: The Mobile Rec Van and Police Activities League (PAL) activities are suspended.
  • Youth Sports Suspended: Youth sports leagues, including San Mateo Little League National, San Mateo Little League American, San Mateo Youth Softball Association and AYSO are suspended.
  • All Picnic Area and Field Reservations Cancelled: All outdoor picnic reservations and miscellaneous field reservations are cancelled.
  • Virtual Recreation: Check out our new Virtual Recreation page where our Parks & Rec staff have handpicked some of their favorite online games, crafts, fitness tips, educational activities and more.

Police Department Services

  • Increased Patrols: The Police Department will be increasing patrols and the number of officers on the street to help maintain order and public safety.
  • Police Department Closed to Public: The Police Department will be closed to public access. Walk-up needs will be assessed on a case-by-case basis via the vestibule phone at the front of the police department building.
  • Non-Emergency Call Number: The non-emergency phone number is (650) 522-7700.
  • Call 9-1-1 for All Emergencies: For emergencies, continue to call 9-1-1.
  • File Police Reports Online: We encourage the public to reduce non-critical calls to police, and remember you can file many police reports online.
  • Parking Enforcement: returned to all parking meters, pay stations, street cleaning zones, and residential parking permit program areas on July 15, 2020. Enforcement has continued for safety violations throughout the health orders.

Public Works Department Services

  • Public Works Department: The Public Works Department will continue to provide road construction, wastewater collection/treatment services, and limited public infrastructure maintenance. Staff will be available for general and project-specific questions over the phone (650) 522-7300 and via email publicworks@cityofsanmateo.org.
    • Street Sweeping: Residential street sweeping returned to normal schedules on June 15, 2020. Downtown street cleaning continues uninterrupted. 
    • Pending Encroachment Permits: Encroachment permits can be issued for all projects in the public right of way. Email pwencroachment@cityofsanmateo.org or call (650) 522-7336 with questions. 
    • Maintenance Concerns Outside of Office Hours: For any maintenance concerns outside of office hours, residents should call (650) 522-7350.
