Youth Activities Council (YAC)

High school-aged teens in our Youth Activities Council represent the voices of San Mateo youth. It is a great way for teens to have their voices heard by government officials and allows them a chance to network with professionals and prominent figures in the San Mateo community. The teens on the Council look for ways to improve city facilities, help the community, plan activities, events and trips. The council meets monthly at City Hall.

The Youth Activities Council was first established in 1969. Our primary purpose is to provide experiences and support for San Mateo’s youth and the young adult population by:
  • Providing safe and enjoyable activities
  • Creating community through special events
  • Teaching and enhancing leadership skills through service learning experiences
  • Learning to see the world around us and understanding our role in decision-making
  • Connecting with other youth commissions/councils to expand our network of knowledge
  • Communicating with professionals and city leaders to further our understanding of government and civil participation
  • Empowering youth to have a voice in the political arena, to get involved, and make a difference!
To qualify for the Youth Activities Council, a teen must be:
  • A resident of the City of San Mateo or a student attending a high school in San Mateo
  • Be entering 9th through 12th by the beginning of each Fall term.
  • Be willing to commit time and energy (about 6 hours a month for meetings & events)
